St. Patrick’s Vs Petershill YFC – 2004
St. Patrick’s 2 – 2 Petershill YFC
What do you know? Another game and we somehow let a good lead slip. This time it was against Petershill at home. We came away with two points dropped, but feeling like all points were lost. Some would simply say, “that’s football” and they would have been so right.
Yes, there is no better quote to sum up certain events, results, highs, lows, chances missed, saves, decisions for or against and any happenings around the game of football than “that’s football“. All those that have followed, played the game or simply accompanied a child to a game would understand what that expression encompasses. It can refer to a last minute winner after being under the cosh for most of the game. In some cases it would refer to over excitement and celebrations which may not be welcome by the aggrieved opposition. At times, it would refer to decisions we would consider unfair and unjust, but yes, that too is football. Could well be in the lead and in control and end up sharing the points, Ladies and Gentlemen “that’s football”.
The game started well for us. Within minutes we could have earned ourselves a penalty when Tyler was brought down. That’s football! We kept the pressure on and six minutes in Euan was brought down when he rounded the keeper. We were awarded a penalty and Beau converted it. Three minutes later Beau turned provider with a great ball over the defense to released Ricky who drove on to score shooting low to beat the keeper at the near post. But no sooner had we celebrated the second goal than Petershill hit back with a great looping ball from the left hand side into the far corner. We went back on the offensive and kept Petershill on the back-foot for long periods of time but failed to break through. Nevertheless, we stayed in the lead at the break.
At the restart we went back on the hunt but were frustrated by a resilient Petershill. In fact, half way through the second half Petershill drew level with a clean strike from just outside the box. Once again, that’s football.
However, having lately relinquished the lead in games we should have seen off, it looks like we certainly must now find the right formula that will see us hold on to our lead. A combination of focus and discipline is required. Where harder work and effort is needed to ensure efforts are rewarded with a higher yield of points, then we must see to that. There has been great performances that unfortunately been overshadowed by the results. The team is playing well without securing the points we are looking for. The objective is therefore to remain positive, maintain the great performances and add some more, show character and keep the faith that just reward is round the corner….
