St. Patrick’s Vs Summerston BC – 2004
St. Patrick’s 13 – 0 Summerston BC
… And so the journey continues. A period of rehabilitation and adjustment maybe, but the objective remains the same: Work on strategies on which to lay the foundations for long term success. The visitors were Summerston on a lovely and dry sunny day at Bothwellhaugh. Having overwhelmed Summerston away, the focus was on the team adapting to the style of play and overall discipline required.
Ollie was incapacitated after an unfortunate Rugby collision. Reilly still out recovering from an obstinate flu. Otherwise, everybody else was back. Dylan was given the opportunity again to stake his claim up front. With the opposition restricting us to a solo goal in the last encounter, the objective is steady progression. Within three minutes of the kick-off we were ahead. We maintained possession in the middle of the park before Dom threaded a through ball to Ricky who lifted it on the run into the far corner. A minute later Beau drove forward and from outside the box let fly a great strike that lodged itself high in the roof of the net. Summerston re-adjusted promptly to minimise the potential damage. They held out for eighteen minutes. Dylan collected a stray clearance from the keeper, feints the last defender then pokes the ball in with the left foot to open his account. Just before the break Dylan increased his tally, side footing a through ball from Ricky into the bottom far corner. It certainly is a much improved first half result compared to the previous game against the opposition.
At the restart Euan came on for Gallagher with Dylan restored into a deeper midfield role. Within six minutes of his introduction he added himself to the score-sheet. Beau played a brilliant ball from deep to find Tyler on the right wing. His cross was neatly finished by Euan who spun the ball with the inside of the right foot to squeeze it at the near post from a tight angle. Summerston improved play of the offside trap was effective for a while forcing us to adapt. A one-two between Mairting and Dom saw Mairtin pick up the return ball and force his way past the opposition defense and rifle his shot into the net. A minute later Mairtin’s silky moves were on full display as he took on the Summerston defense single handedly and went on to beat the keeper with a great solo effort. The opposition’s bravery was challenged time and time again and their efforts and character deserve praise. But the misery kept piling on. Ricky went through on the right wing and his cut back was finished off by Dom at the second attempt. Immediately after Mairtin burst through rendering the offside trap ineffective. His cut back was finished off by Ricky. Ricky then turned provider with a cut back to Dom to score. Then Tyler follows up on a parried shot from Euan to score at the second attempt. Ricky popped up with another assist putting Euan through to score. Summerston’s misery was brought to an end with a final but brilliantly worked goal. Ben recovery run served him well as he won back possession on the left hand side. He then moved it on to Joseph on the right hand side. Joseph played an inch perfect ball through to Euan who ran unto it and rolled it past the oncoming keeper to record his hat trick.
This was another step on the progression ladders which helped confirm that we were on the right track. The hard work on the training ground will continue as we now move on to a more intensive phase to get us where we want to be….
